Fair elections in Russia?

By Moritz | November 27, 2007

On Monday Russian President Putin accused the United States of trying to taint the legitimacy of next week’s Russian parliamentary elections by pressing a group of prominent independent election observers to abandon efforts to monitor the campaign.Mr. Putin contended that the monitors, who are deployed by the OSCE, had halted plans to appraise the parliamentary balloting at the urging of the State Department in Washington.

Mr. Putin’s statements in recent weeks have taken on an increasingly nationalistic tone as he has sought to muster support for his party in the elections on Sunday. Speaking to reporters on Monday in St. Petersburg, he once again criticized what he suggested was foreign meddling in Russia’s affairs.

IAEA report: Iran is co-operating but not enough

By Moritz | November 23, 2007

20071123_iaea.jpgMohamed ElBaradei said yesterday, Iran is making progress in resolving suspicions about past nuclear activities but must do more before the IAEA can verify important aspects of the country’s nuclear program. ElBaradei also said that the agency’s knowledge of Iran’s current nuclear activities was diminishing and that he could not declare with certainty whether Iran’s program was peaceful or intended to make weapons.

“The agency has so far not been able to verify some important aspects of Iran’s nuclear program,” Dr. ElBaradei told a meeting of the agency’s 35-country board. Outstanding issues, he said, include “those relevant to the scope and nature of Iran’s centrifuge enrichment activities, as well as those relevant to alleged studies and other activities that could have military applications.”

Iran replaces chief nuclear negotiator

By Moritz | October 23, 2007

20071022_negotiator.jpgIran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made clear today that there was no room for negotiation on the country’s nuclear program, only hours before Iran’s new chief nuclear negotiator made his international debut in Rome. The tone for the first talks between the new negotiator, Saeed Jalili, and the EU’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, was set when Mr. Ahmadinejad announced, “Iran will not retreat one iota.”

“We are in favor of talks but we will not negotiate with anyone about our right to nuclear technology,” he was quoted on state-run television in Tehran as saying during a trip to Armenia. “Whoever wants to negotiate about his right will lose part of it,” he said.

Mr. Solana had hoped to restart the moribund negotiations on behalf of the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, which hinge on Iran’s acceptance of a freeze on producing enriched uranium, which can be used to produce electricity or to fuel bombs.

US President George W. Bush issued a stark warning on Iran on Wednesday, suggesting that if the country obtained nuclear arms, it could lead to “World War III.” “We got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel,” Mr. Bush said at a White House news conference, referring to a remark by the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that Israel “will disappear soon.” Mr. Bush said he had “told people that if you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.”

Putin warns of military action against Iran

By Moritz | October 16, 2007

20071017_putiniran1.jpg

Russian president Vladimir Putin told a summit of five Caspian Sea nations in Iran today that any use of military force in the Caspian region was unacceptable and in a declaration the countries agreed that none of them would allow their territories to be used as a base for launching military strikes against any of the others.

“We should not even think of making use of force in this region,” Mr. Putin said. Mr. Putin’s comments and the declaration come at a time when France and the United States have refused to rule out military action to halt Iran’s nuclear energy program, which they believe masks a desire to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is solely for peaceful purposes.
